LCL chargeable CBM calculation explained

For Sea LCL and Rail LCL, fba.solutions compares physical volume with weight-based volume and uses the greater quantity for the freight calculation.

The chargeable CBM formula

Chargeable CBM = max(actual CBM, weight in kg ÷ 1,000)

A minimum of 1 CBM applies. The calculation therefore accounts for both space and density.

Calculate chargeable CBM

Enter the shipment's physical volume and gross weight. The calculator applies the same LCL rule described above, including the 1 CBM minimum.

Indicative calculation only. The final quotation also depends on origin, destination and the selected freight service.

Worked examples

ShipmentActual CBMkg ÷ 1,000Chargeable CBM
3 CBM / 1,500 kg3.01.53.0
3 CBM / 4,000 kg3.04.04.0
0.7 CBM / 300 kg0.70.31.0 minimum

Why weight can increase the billing quantity

A shipment can occupy relatively little physical space while being heavy. The weight-based comparison prevents dense cargo from being priced only on its smaller physical volume. The calculator performs this comparison automatically for supported Sea LCL and Rail LCL quotations.

From chargeable CBM to freight quotation

Chargeable CBM is only one pricing input. Origin, destination and the selected transport service also affect the quotation. For the broader pricing logic, see Shipping Costs from China to Germany and the LCL shipping guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is chargeable CBM?

Chargeable CBM is the quantity used for LCL pricing after comparing physical volume with the weight-based volume.

What is the fba.solutions LCL formula?

Chargeable CBM equals the greater of actual CBM and weight in kilograms divided by 1,000. A minimum of 1 CBM applies.

What happens if 3 CBM weighs 4,000 kg?

The weight-based volume is 4 CBM, so the chargeable volume is 4 CBM.

Does the rule apply to both Sea LCL and Rail LCL?

Yes. The same chargeable-CBM rule is used for Sea LCL and Rail LCL in the current fba.solutions calculation logic.
