Sea vs Rail Freight from China to Germany
Sea and rail can both be suitable for China–Germany freight. The useful comparison is not a generic winner, but the current schedule, shipment size, origin, destination and quotation for the cargo.

How LCL quantity is compared
For both Sea LCL and Rail LCL, fba.solutions uses the greater of actual volume and weight-based volume. The rule is chargeable CBM = max(actual CBM, weight in kg ÷ 1,000), with a minimum of 1 CBM. This makes a mode comparison more meaningful because dense cargo is not compared on physical volume alone.
See the chargeable CBM guide for examples.
Schedule and routing matter
Do not choose a mode only from a generic transit-time claim. The relevant question is which departure is available for the shipment and how the main carriage fits the required delivery date. fba.solutions publishes configured schedule information where available in its transit-time guide.
When to compare a quotation
Price depends on the selected origin, shipment quantity, destination and service. For a current comparison, calculate the applicable Sea or Rail quotation instead of relying on a static rate. The shipping-cost guide explains the pricing inputs.
Frequently asked questions
Is rail freight always faster than sea freight?
No. Actual timing depends on the configured departure, routing and shipment circumstances. Compare the current schedules and quotation options rather than assuming one mode is always faster.
Are Sea LCL and Rail LCL calculated the same way?
For chargeable volume in fba.solutions, both use the greater of actual CBM and weight in kilograms divided by 1,000, with a minimum of 1 CBM.
Which mode should I choose?
The suitable mode depends on shipment size, origin, available schedule, timing requirements, destination and current quotation. The calculator lets you compare applicable options.
